Emmy

Emmy Storms (Katwijk aan Zee, 1988) started playing the violin at age five, following the Suzuki method with Stieneke Voorhoeve-Poot. After this, she went to the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague where she initially studied with Qui van Woerdekom and Koosje van Haeringen, and then with Jaring Walta for her Bachelor and Master degrees. In June 2012, she finished her Master studies, including a dedicated orchestral specialization track, scoring the highest possible mark (10/10) and obtaining a distinction for Musical Artistry. Since January 2013, she has been studying with Philippe Graffin.

Emmy received multiple awards at the Maassluisse Muziekweek, the Rabobank Competition, the Princess Christina Competition, the InterProvincial Music Competition and the Iordens Viooldagen. In 2005 she obtained the 1st prize and the Herman Krebbers Prize (compulsory piece) during the Davina van Wely competition. In 2009 and 2011 she obtained 3rd and 4th prizes at the National Oskar Back Violin Competition, and in 2011 she also was awarded with the NTR prize for the best rendition of the compulsory piece. In 2011 she also was awarded with the Anton Kersjes Prize. As a soloist, Emmy a.o. recently played the Tzigane by Maurice Ravel with the National Student Orchestra conducted by Lucas Vis, the violin concerto by Korngold with the National Youth Orchestra conducted by Antony Hermus (as Artist in Residence of the NJO Music Summer 2012), and the Alban Berg violin concerto with Symphony Orchestra Bellitoni conducted by Jurjen Hempel. Emmy plays in Trio Suleika with pianist Gabriele Leporatti and cellist Pepijn Meeuws, and in the Magma Duo with pianist Cynthia Liem. In the 2014-2015 season, the Magma Duo was laureate of the Dutch Classical Talent Tour and Award. Furthermore, in 2014 the Magma Duo received the first prize and two special prizes at the ‘A Feast of Duos!’ competition in Sion, Switzerland.

Emmy also has extensive experience playing in orchestras, both as a tutti player and concertmaster. Currently, she is concertmaster of the string orchestra ‘Ciconia Consort’ conducted by Dick van Gasteren.

Furthermore, Emmy also enjoys playing multiple traditional music genres, including Irish fiddle, Jewish klezmer, tango and gypsy music. She plays Latin and Irish folk music with guitarist Pedro Diaz, and plays in a traditional music band called ‘Looking for Matthew’ with Annelies Storms (flute/vocals), Paul van Nispen (percussion) and Pedro Diaz (guitar). Emmy plays on a violin made by Ferdinando Gagliano, which was offered to her on loan by the National Music Instruments Fund (NMF).
